Algorithmic Proximity and the Problem of Digital Boundaries

Posted on April 18, 2025April 18, 2025 by Khannea Sun'Tzu

In recent years, the behavior of social media algorithms has increasingly affected the way we navigate emotionally sensitive situations. One particular pattern that continues to raise concern is the way platforms like Instagram suggest connections between users—often based on minimal digital proximity or inferred behavioral patterns.

It is not uncommon for individuals attempting to move on from a breakup or emotionally complicated situation to encounter unexpected reminders of people they have deliberately distanced themselves from. Despite having no recent interactions, no searches, and no direct engagement, users frequently find that former partners, acquaintances, or connected individuals appear in their suggested content feed. Sometimes, these suggestions even include people tangentially related to past relationships—new partners, mutual contacts, or friends of friends.

This is not a coincidence. Instagram’s algorithms function by analyzing a wide variety of signals, including geographic proximity, shared connections, interaction patterns, and profile overlap. The system is designed to optimize engagement, and it does so by continuously offering suggestions that increase the likelihood of a user clicking, reacting, or interacting further. Unfortunately, this process does not take into account the emotional or psychological context of those suggestions.

While for some users these connections may be benign or even welcome, in emotionally charged or sensitive cases, they can have a significantly negative impact. Being reminded of a person or situation one is actively trying to avoid can disrupt recovery, reopen emotional wounds, or lead to impulsive responses. In more extreme scenarios, such algorithmic proximity can exacerbate existing tensions or fuel unwanted interactions.

The most concerning aspect is that users are given very little control over these suggestions. Aside from generic options like “not interested” or “hide,” there is no robust mechanism to manage or preemptively avoid emotionally triggering content. There is no way to set digital boundaries in the way one might in real life—through deliberate silence, distance, or disengagement. As a result, the platform effectively overrides the user’s intent.

This issue becomes more serious when considered at scale. As users entrust more of their social and emotional lives to digital platforms, the systems governing those platforms need to be designed with a clearer understanding of emotional context and psychological safety. In their current form, these algorithms prioritize efficiency and engagement over user wellbeing, and the consequences of that design can range from minor discomfort to real-world harm.

In conclusion, while social media platforms provide powerful tools for connection, they can also erode boundaries in ways that are difficult to anticipate or control. The systems that govern our digital interactions must evolve to respect emotional space and user intent. Until then, individuals are left to navigate these unintended consequences with limited tools and little transparency.
