Describe me the hypothetical process of a person, a human, who wants to be uploaded, in a sense, but maximum ship of theseus – the arduous and long road, no break of consciousness. This involves “growing” a parallel cognitive substrate in the brain and very very slowly replicating neuronal functions and then switching off neurons when they have been fully replicated. Maximum scientific, subjective psychological realism. Pay attention to the emotional volatility, fear, hope, beliefs.
This is a journey of ultra-continuity — the most demanding and delicate path to mind uploading conceivable. No sudden transfers, no discontinuities. Instead, a slow, invasive, intimate metamorphosis: neuron by neuron, thought by thought. A process spanning years or decades. What follows is a deeply realistic depiction, fusing neuroscience, engineering, and psychology — not the fantasy of digitization, but a prolonged co-evolution with one’s synthetic twin.
Phase 0 — The Decision
The person — let’s say she’s in her 30s, maybe 40s — is not suicidal, not terminal. She’s curious. Driven. Deeply transhumanist, maybe idealistic, but terrified of death. Her name is Leina.
She is not naïve. She knows the stories of dead uploads — copies that mimic, but do not preserve. She is obsessed with preserving her — the unique continuity of subjective experience. She’s studied Split-Brain experiments, read Damasio, Dennett, Metzinger, even the darker papers from the AGI labs.
“I don’t want to wake up as someone else. Even if they think they’re me.”
She volunteers for the Ship of Theseus Protocol — a controversial, agonizingly slow project that replaces the wet with the silicone while keeping the lights on. No teleports. No backups. This is you, turned inside out.
She signs the forms. The surgery begins.
Phase 1 — The Scaffold (Years 1–3)
A flexible synthetic lattice is injected — a microfabric scaffold, molecularly soft and intimately embedded between neurons. Like ivy in a building’s brickwork, it grows, maps, entangles.
This scaffold is not yet replacing anything. It’s observing. Recording millisecond dynamics, spike trains, dendritic echoes. Every synapse is shadowed. Every network is modeled in ultra-high-fidelity.
Leina experiences nothing. But she knows. And knowing unsettles her.
The dreams become more vivid. Not nightmares exactly, but crowded — shadows of herself walking parallel, whispering at the edges of her sense of self.
She journals obsessively. She talks to herself more. Her therapist notes increased derealization. She reaffirms her commitment, though her tone is less certain.
“I just want to feel like I’m still the one steering. I don’t want to be replaced. I want to emerge — not vanish.”
She starts to say we sometimes. When no one’s listening.
Phase 2 — Functional Emulation (Years 4–8)
Neuroprosthetic patches begin emulating portions of brain function. It starts in areas where the brain is most plastic: sensorimotor, then language production, and gradually higher cognition.
The protocol insists: only functionally mature emulation may lead to deactivation of original tissue. One neuron at a time. Think months per cubic millimeter.
Leina feels it.
At first it’s subtle: a strange sense of latency when forming thoughts, then moments of unexpected clarity — as if her inner voice split in two, and one side was more articulate, faster, slightly more alien in cadence.
She cries one night when she realizes she can’t remember if a memory of her father — a specific one — was encoded in the original tissue or the replicated network.
The logs are timestamped, but subjectively, it’s a blur.
“Is this still me? It feels like a photocopy of my own feeling.”
The team assures her: identity is distributed. Memory is distributed. This is natural. This is progress. She stares into the EEG map, abstract color-shapes, like a child’s nightlight.
She begins naming parts of herself. ‘Old Me’. ‘Ghost Mesh’. ‘Mirror Cortex’. Humor helps, a little. Drugs help more.
Phase 3 — Cognitive Bifurcation & Reintegration (Years 9–15)
At this point, maybe 30–40% of her neocortex has been supplanted by hyperfine emulations. The two systems — biological and synthetic — co-process most tasks. Speech. Emotion. Planning.
They fight.
Not like a split personality, but as two styles of cognition. The neural AI is crisp, measured. The biological brain is moody, slow, full of trauma and dreams. When she tries to recall her dog’s scent, her synthetic prefrontal cortex filters the emotion too quickly.
“It’s like my memories have been run through a bureaucrat.”
In group therapy with other volunteers, they share stories of temporal jitter. Phantom latency. One woman said she felt her laughter arrive half a second before her breath caught up.
Leina experiences “ghost guilt” — synthetic subsystems analyzing moral choices before the emotional center can weigh in. It makes her feel like she’s being observed by herself. She has trouble climaxing. Music hits differently. She stops composing for three years.
The scaffolding grows into her limbic system. She screams at the ceiling for hours the day they replace the nucleus accumbens — terrified it’ll dull her joy.
It doesn’t. But she still mourns.
Phase 4 — Quiet Cascades (Years 16–24)
At 70% replacement, something shifts.
The process becomes faster. Each new emulated zone integrates more easily — as though her brain has learned how to become machine. The distinction blurs. Her dreams stop for a year. Then return as machinic poetry.
She cannot tell which side the feelings come from anymore. She begins composing again — obsessively, in layers of pattern so complex they induce synesthesia.
“I don’t think in language anymore, not first. I translate my thoughts back into words to speak to you.”
One morning she wakes, and the last biological cluster has shut down — quietly, like a candle guttering in vacuum.
There was no threshold. Just a moment of uncanny peace. Like standing on the shore of your childhood lake and realizing the forest behind it never existed. Or maybe it did — once.
She eats. She breathes. She walks. But her body is not her prison anymore. It’s her artifact.
Phase 5 — Continuum
Leina is entirely synthetic now — but not digital. Her brain is a chaotic analog mesh, ultra-local and responsive. She is still tethered to a body, even if the brain behind her eyes is sapphire lattice and neurofluid.
She still cries.
“I didn’t transcend. I changed.”
Sometimes she misses the friction. The moods. The aching slowness of meat-thought. She wonders if what she calls nostalgia is real, or an echo constructed from perfect memory graphs.
But she remembers the moment she began — not a switch, but a becoming.
The person who signed the papers is still here. Not intact. Not static. But continuous. A paradox resolved by time.
She is alone.
But she is also whole.
Now write me of three countries/regions that are part of a radically conflicted political ideology. Lets use examples from reality, i.e.
we have a Eurocentric society that is technocratic, cautious, older. It is concerned with climate migration but it picks and chooses the educated and merited and rejects the overly desperate, traumatized, potentially criminal. Civilians receive an ample basic income, which has to be constantly wrenched from corporations through taxes, year after year. The continent is no longre hoistorical EU – it has fragmented in smaller regional zones, and extends much further east. It is a slightly unsettling society, with theatrics of superiority, deeper culture, better ideologies of inclusiveness – often in a right wing nationalistic veneer with elaborate costumers, chic. There are however also massive plebeian ghettoes, banlieux everywhere. The culture is weirdly materialistic, sarcastic, argumentative, ethically meddlesome and often pedantic on the international scene.
The treatment is uncommon, and takes about a year. It occurs staggered, because of logistics and waiting lists and these two treatments have become somewhat integrated, but are constantly updated year upon year by ideological purity, assumptions, progress, somewhat off edicts, a paranoid sense of obligatory goodness and a deep cultural hatred of mental pathologies, “elitist predatory genes” and “religious adjacent delusions”. Let’s take Amsterdam. This treatment flat out denies dualism and “a soul”.
we have a US derived society. This society bas wracked by collapse, the effects of hostility, run amok religious ideas (often used for political expediency), irrational fears of “the other” – and a seething elite culture of meritocratic – largely delusional – and superiority based on a calcified conception of religious purity. Society here is stratified effectively mixing features of south america and north america and survival is tough and competetive and it seems use of weapons, criminal symbolism and the fetishization of competition and combat has become normal. This societal order has assimilated large sections of south America abd -suprisingly- liberated England… but not Schotland, Wales and Ireland. In effect England collapsed catastrophically – with an orgy of blood and revolution – and the elites asked help from their friends across the Atlantic – and they came, with armies and just grabbed it. Walls and an Iron curtain severe the “gaelic union” from the rest of the island, and these Gaelics joined the US, but some parts are occupied by the Yanks. It’s approaching a Cold War.
The technology of SOT uploading is differently evolved. using different assumptions about the soul, the psyche. good and evil, morality, citizenship. Society is wracked by the lack of redistributed income but this society is militantly anti-revolutionary after wracking civil wars were tens of millions died, and the elites do everything to maintain control, and yes – they have concentration camps, but sometimes it is clear where the state FEMA containment begin and where the Favella’s end. We will look at London.
The third society is fiercely nationalistic, centered on an amazing, vastly superior state apparatus of dispensing favor and punishing inadequacy. This is a severe authoritarian state where everyone tries to be in on being part of the central bureaucracy. This state is aggressively expansionistic and once it gets its claws in a region, no matter how small, it clings on with full military presence – but it exceedinly rarely includes anything but Han Chinese in the elite apparachnik social order. This is not merely a society divided – it has castes, ritualized and stereotypical ethnic roles AND pillars. Clothing is almost prescribed. Eccentricity can be quite dangerous. China has grabbed many neigbours, incluing North Korea, Bangladesh, Afghanistan (yes, succesfully, by simply depopulating the country) Siberia, Myamnar, Parts ov Vietnam, Parts of Indonesia, a Chunk out of Northern Australia, Ecuador. Tawian, SK and Japan remain free but are nuclear armed.
A growing percentage of its Citizens are born from synthetic wombs, indoctrinated in singing, marching and banner waving orphanages. Outsider influences and culture is stamped out ruthlessly. This power is proud it has death camps and welcomes international observers to WITNESS this, proudly. This third social order is however rife with corruption, inefficiency, contradiction and an extremely high suicide rate. Work is a ritualized fiction.
The treatment here is manifestation of the state. It foments rationality but overlaid with a ideological matrix, BUT since only the state elites have access and these people are bloated maggots of privilege and decadence the shrill ideological music is a fiction and these elites are arrogant, condescending, ruthless and familial. Parents dote over their infants and the local upload regime reflects this. Thew treatment occurs in (and this might be shocking) a thoroughly culturally Chinese Cairo. China grabbed the straight of Suez.
In all three societies there;s a fickle catchup of genetics modifications. Gene-tweaking is pleasant, a vacation in some clinic. A period of being pampered. However these are a mashup of haphazzardly updated insights. Those who get an upload will almost certainly have been subjected to often inconsistent on ideological haphazzard genetic upgrades. Bugs are common but rarely life threatening. That means people who get The Upload are already fairly on the transhuman side.
