Are socialists in favor of a Basic Income?

Posted on August 24, 2015August 24, 2015 by Khannea Sun'Tzu

Nope they are not. At least not in the Netherlands. This is the position of the SP (Socialist Party) on Basic Income.

Translated by me as…

SP Elected Parliamentarian Paul Ulenbelt; “An unconditional basic income is a sympathetic idea, but essentially nothing more. Socialists feel everyone should make a contribution to society. We do this by offering service to other people and in turn receiving those services from others. That is the only way society can be maintained and improved. Everyone is expected to make a contribution according to ability. The Basic Income does not assume such reciprocal service. People who decide Basic Income is sufficient for them are no longer assumed to make a contribution to the collective.

That’s the reason Basic Income has never materialized in the real world.

We thinks about the a Basic Income must answer the question on the size of it. Enough money to not perish is insufficient for a decent living. IN the Netherlands we do have a Basic Income, and that’s social service for pensioners. Those people are assumed to not have to perform service on account of old age. But for those who are assumed able to work a Basic Income is not needed. Those people have a right to work and an adequate wage. FOr those who can’t work because of unemployment there’s welfare, which is currently too low in the Netherlands. The social stuggle should not be about the question a Basic Income is desirable, but rather the question on how society provided an adequate income for those who can not offer service to society. There’s an argument that Basic Income might simply the social security system, but that argument holds no water : Most money paid by the state to the non working are based on wages previously enjoyed. Losing your work on account of unemployment or disability and then having to survive of a Basic Income would signify a considerable and unacceptable loss.

So there you have it. Socialists are struggling for a society where reciprocity is assumed from everyone, and those who can’t offer work are assumed to receive an alternative in the form of a social insurance. Of course there are many arguments pro and con either position and I may get in that debate later on, but today the only thing I wanted to clarify is that Socialists are arguable hostile to the idea of a Basic Income.

I asked them what their position on Technological Unemployment is, but it seems they couldn’t find one on the spur of the moment.
