AI, Moloch, and the Race to the Bottom: Humanity’s Quest to Screw Itself Over for Good

Posted on October 26, 2024 by Khannea Sun'Tzu

Introduction

In the face of unprecedented crises, you’d think humanity would be rallying around its best minds, devising brilliant, cooperative solutions. But no, because why should we? After all, facing abstract dangers like climate change, disease vectors from factory farming, economic inequality, and, most importantly, AI? That’s hard. That requires thought, sacrifice, and a willingness to confront the fact that we’re racing headlong into the worst parts of every dystopian sci-fi novel ever written. And if there’s anything humanity loves to do, it’s to take the easy way out, preferably while pointing fingers at some cabal of shadowy villains like Bill Gates, the WEF, or some ancient conspiracy. It’s the Jews after all guys.

Let’s set the stage: we’re standing on the edge of a cliff, where the landscape is littered with abstract threats most people don’t understand, can’t understand, or frankly would prefer not to understand. The Moloch Dilemma, for instance, is our shorthand for describing how we’re locked in a cycle of competition, unable to slow down for fear of being overtaken. Each player in this grand, destructive game—whether a corporation, a nation, or an individual—must continuously push forward, even if the finish line is a sheer drop into oblivion. And now, AI is here to help us finish the job.

What follows are five wonderfully uplifting examples of how emerging AI, and soon AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), are poised to shred capitalism, obliterate global stability, and generally make a mess of things in ways we’ll struggle to even comprehend. Then, because I’m generous, I’ll explain why none of this will actually inspire us to do a damn thing about it. Politicians are mostly in their twilight years, beholden to lobbyists, and our knee-jerk reactions against “stifling competition” will ensure we keep walking, eyes wide open, right over that edge.

1. AI-Driven Voter Manipulation: Because Who Needs Free Will Anyway?

If you thought Cambridge Analytica and algorithm-driven echo chambers were unsettling, just wait. AI is here to refine voter manipulation down to a science so precise it makes Big Brother look like Dolores Umbridge. Algorithms can now not only nudge opinions but shape them with surgical precision, presenting content that reinforces biases and deepens divisions, all while quietly distorting your understanding of reality. And, of course, these algorithms are designed and controlled not by accountable public figures but by the highest bidders: governments, corporations, or anyone else with a fat enough wallet and loose enough morals.

This AI-fueled manipulation isn’t just dangerous for democracy; it’s a lethal injection for capitalism. When our choices and beliefs are micro-engineered by a handful of tech overlords, the concept of a “free market” becomes a joke. What we buy, who we vote for, what we value—all of it filtered through AI-curated ideologies that mold us into perfect little consumer-citizens, blissfully oblivious to how every thought and opinion has been carefully tailored. But hey, who cares? At least we’re all making “informed” choices, right?

2. Total Surveillance and Citizen Scoring: Smile, You’re Always on Camera

China’s Social Credit System is quaint compared to what’s coming. AI-enhanced surveillance networks, complete with facial recognition, geolocation tracking, and social behavior profiling, will let governments know more about you than your mother ever did. By observing every interaction, transaction, and action, they can assign you a profile that determines what you can buy, where you can go, and whether or not you can take that flight out of the country. This isn’t about keeping “bad actors” in line; it’s about keeping everyone in line.

In this brave new world, democracy, privacy, and free speech all take a nosedive. The worst part? It’s depressingly easy to imagine this surveillance tech being sold as a matter of “public safety” or “efficiency.” People love convenience! Meanwhile, capitalism starts to resemble a digital feudal system, with a handful of tech elites and state actors controlling everyone’s lives while a well-placed algorithm ensures you never notice. People keep consuming, keep working, keep paying taxes—but with a cheerful smile because after all, “if you’re not doing anything wrong, you’ve got nothing to hide.”

3. Automating Jobs Out of Existence: Congratulations, You’re Obsolete!

Remember when automation was supposed to free us all for leisure, creative pursuits, and life-fulfilling activities? Instead, it’s here to bulldoze the job market into oblivion. AI and robotics are well on their way to displacing workers in manufacturing, transportation, retail, customer service, and increasingly, white-collar professions. What will the newly jobless do in a system that ties worth to productivity and income? Well, that’s not the concern of the companies pushing the automation agenda. They’re here for efficiency, baby!

The impacts of job automation are devastating for capitalism. When significant chunks of the population no longer have a meaningful way to participate in the economy, social welfare systems buckle, consumer spending plummets, and unrest festers. Economies can’t grow on the backs of people who can’t buy anything, and governments already stretched thin will struggle to keep the peace. This spiral of doom will hit struggling countries the hardest, leading to economic collapse, refugee crises, and the kind of international destabilization that even today’s apocalyptic prophets aren’t fully prepared for.

4. Autonomous Warfare: AI Takes Over the Battlefield

Imagine the worst possible outcome of militarized AI. Now imagine that but 100 times worse, with drones identifying, targeting, and eliminating threats without human intervention. Autonomous weapons are cheaper, faster, and deadlier, making it easier than ever to wage war without significant human or economic costs—at least not on the side wielding the AI tech. Just like that, war becomes not a last resort but a continuous, low-cost solution to any problem big or small.

In a world where AI handles the battlefield, the human costs of war will become invisible, which ironically makes it easier to start and perpetuate conflicts indefinitely. International diplomacy and stability will be sacrificed at the altar of automation, and countries that don’t invest in AI-powered militaries will be sitting ducks. It’s a beautiful recipe for endless wars that destabilize nations, cripple economies, and keep the world’s richest defense contractors and AI firms laughing all the way to the bank. Peace was so last century, anyway.

5. Hyper-Efficient Financial Markets: When the Economy Outgrows Humanity

In the financial sector, AI can already make trades faster than the speed of thought, adjusting algorithms in real-time based on market shifts and global news before most people have even had their morning coffee. What does this mean for the average person? Not much, except that you might want to think twice about that 401(k). AI-driven trading algorithms are set to manipulate markets at a scale that puts human traders out of the game entirely.

With AI running the markets, wealth distribution will become even more skewed, with those who control these algorithms hoarding obscene amounts of capital, while everyone else scrambles to keep up in an economy whose dynamics are incomprehensible. Good luck trying to regulate or even understand it. Financial collapses will become faster, more severe, and less manageable, while our supposed “safety nets” will be left hopelessly shredded. And yet, we’ll likely keep trusting the markets until the very end.

The Tragically Inevitable Conclusion

Here’s the kicker: none of this is remotely hypothetical. Every one of these scenarios is based on existing trends, technologies, and incentives, and all are entirely plausible within the next decade or two. But will anyone listen? Don’t hold your breath. The general public shrugs and goes back to binge-watching Netflix or obsessing over celebrity drama. Politicians, meanwhile, are mostly too old, too financially entangled, or too beholden to lobbyists to take meaningful action. Let’s be real: what incentive does an aging senator, already deep in a corporate pocket, have to tackle the complexities of AI?

Besides, our economy’s most powerful players aren’t going to let pesky things like ethics or the public good interfere with their profit margins. Any attempt to slow down the AI train will be met with cries of “stifling competition” or “curbing innovation.” And why wouldn’t they resist? From their perspective, they’re winning the Moloch Dilemma — securing short-term gains even as the long-term consequences rip the world apart. And the public? Well, the public is mostly preoccupied with either hand-waving away the issue or misplacing the blame on some shadowy, often absurd scapegoat. Jews people. It’s the Jews!

So, where does that leave us? Staring into a future shaped by forces we don’t understand, driven by players we can’t influence, on a collision course with a world most people can’t even imagine. The AI genie isn’t going back into the bottle, and every day we avoid confronting it, the cost grows exponentially. For those lucky enough to sit atop the AI pyramid, the world will become their playground. For everyone else? It’s going to be hell on earth, a permanent race to the bottom that will strip away rights, autonomy, and even the illusion of choice.

And here’s the best part: we won’t do a damn thing about it. Most people simply don’t have the bandwidth to care, and even those who do lack the power to change anything. So, yes, we are well and truly doomed. Enjoy the ride, folks.

And.. ohhh right… this article was written by A.I.
