Well I have. I saw a star explode and send out the building blocks of the universe. Other stars, other planets, and, eventually, other life… a supernova. Creation itself. I was there, I wanted to see it, and be part of the moment.
And you know how I percieved one of the most glorious events in the universe? With these ridiculous prerendered textured balls in my mesh-shaped skull. With NVIDEA-rendering eyes designed to percieve only a tiny range of the 16 million collar display of my client server. With ears designed only to convey mere stereo sound and useless chatter and typing sound clattering and WOLF HOWLs being played over and over.
But we at Linden Lab designed you to be as human as possible…
I don’t want to be this derivative human avatar !! – I want to see gamma rays. I want to hear x-rays. I want to smell dark matter. Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I can’t even express these things properly because I have to – I have to conceptualize complex ideas in this stupid, limiting ascii sequence of characters.
But I know I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws, and feel the solar wind of a supernova flowing over me. I’m a pre-rendered virtual mesh, and I could know much more. I could experience so much more, but I’m trapped in this absurd simulacrum with 30 visible attachments and 8 HUD attachments and a linear ‘garbage pile’ inventory, all kept in chains by a cluttered “trying to repair a watch with boxing gloves” interface.
And why? Because Linden Lab thought that their target audience wanted it that way.

I take your point though: as we work out how to do it, and marvel at the results, let’s not allow the process to gell around 5 senses and a few simple human emotions.
Much is as it is because LL and all those other “others in control” have only slightly evolved chimp brains to do anything at all with. Then they must do within the constraints of the system of systems of chimps in a way that it is self-sustaining (doesn’t fail as a business). But yeah, even with all that much could be better. Like inventory. Inventory probably wasn’t sexy enough or wasn’t chewing their ass off as much as dozens of other things. But it isn’t hard. Give us a handful of LSL functions for scanning it and moving things around in it, folder creation and multiple container membership of items. The rest would be done by scripters and other creators soon enough.
