The European Parliament Must Express Its Concern Over the Implications of a Trump Presidency

Posted on November 16, 2024 by Khannea Sun'Tzu

The impending inauguration of Donald J. Trump as President of the United States has sent shockwaves across the globe. Europe, a continent bound to the United States through historic alliances, shared values, and mutual interests, finds itself at a critical juncture. As the European Parliament represents the collective conscience and political will of the European Union, it is imperative that it speaks with a united and resolute voice regarding the potential repercussions of this seismic political development.

The rhetoric and actions of President-elect Trump, both during his campaign and post-election transition, present a series of alarming prospects that merit Europe’s immediate and unequivocal concern. These concerns extend not only to America’s domestic policies but also to the cascading effects these policies may have on international stability, human rights, and the global rule of law.

The Erosion of Human Rights and Civil Liberties

One of the foremost concerns is the apparent disregard for established human rights norms. During his campaign, Trump openly endorsed practices such as waterboarding and other forms of torture, claiming they were justified and effective. Such statements undermine decades of progress in establishing international human rights frameworks, including the Geneva Conventions, to which the United States is a signatory.

Furthermore, reports of proposed policies such as the establishment of “medical concentration camps”—where individuals unable to afford healthcare might face forced institutionalization or denial of treatment—should set off alarm bells across Europe. These policies threaten the most vulnerable segments of society, starkly contradicting principles of human dignity and equality.

The Specter of Mass Deportations

Trump’s proposed immigration policies, including the deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants, also warrant grave concern. Mass deportations on this scale are not only logistically infeasible but also carry the potential for widespread human suffering, family separations, and violations of due process. The European Parliament must unequivocally condemn any attempt to institutionalize xenophobia or racial discrimination under the guise of immigration reform.

Attacks on Social Protections and Public Services

President-elect Trump’s rhetoric has extended to questioning the validity of fundamental social protections, including veteran benefits. Suggestions of reducing or outright canceling benefits for those who have served in the armed forces have alarmed advocates for veterans’ rights. Such actions would undermine the social contract and betray the sacrifices made by those who have defended their country.

Similarly, threats to dismantle public healthcare systems and privatize critical services would have catastrophic consequences for the American populace, leaving millions without access to affordable healthcare and exacerbating socioeconomic inequalities. Europe’s experience with universal healthcare systems provides a compelling counterexample, and the European Parliament should highlight this contrast in its critique.

Curtailment of Press Freedom and Political Dissent

Another area of acute concern is Trump’s ongoing antagonism toward the press and free speech. His threats to “open up libel laws” to make it easier to sue journalists, combined with frequent attacks on individual reporters and media outlets, indicate a troubling pattern of suppressing dissent. The European Union, which upholds freedom of expression as a cornerstone of democracy, must firmly oppose such anti-democratic tendencies.

Escalating Racial and Religious Tensions

Trump’s campaign rhetoric frequently targeted marginalized communities, including Muslims, Mexicans, and African Americans. The rise in hate crimes and emboldened far-right movements following his election victory is a direct consequence of this divisive rhetoric. Europe, with its own painful history of intolerance and discrimination, cannot remain silent in the face of these developments. The European Parliament must call for adherence to principles of inclusivity, diversity, and mutual respect.

The Threat to Global Climate Commitments

The Trump administration’s stated intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreement poses an existential threat to global climate action. Europe has been at the forefront of combating climate change, and any rollback of American commitments would jeopardize collective efforts to mitigate this crisis. The European Parliament must urgently appeal to the incoming administration to honor its international obligations and prioritize environmental sustainability.

Undermining NATO and Transatlantic Alliances

Finally, Trump’s dismissive attitude toward NATO and other international alliances raises serious questions about the future of transatlantic security. His transactional view of defense obligations undermines decades of mutual trust and shared strategic interests. The European Parliament must reaffirm its commitment to NATO and call on the United States to do the same, emphasizing the importance of collective security in an increasingly volatile world.

A Call to Action

In light of these concerns, the European Parliament must act decisively to convey its apprehensions to the incoming U.S. administration. This could take the form of a formal resolution outlining Europe’s expectations for adherence to democratic principles, human rights, and international law. Such a resolution should highlight the following key demands:

  1. Respect for Human Rights: Reiterate the necessity of upholding international human rights standards, including the prohibition of torture and the protection of vulnerable populations.
  2. Commitment to Social Justice: Urge the U.S. government to preserve social safety nets, including healthcare and veteran benefits, and to address systemic inequalities.
  3. Promotion of Inclusivity: Advocate for policies that protect marginalized communities and foster social cohesion rather than division.
  4. Defense of Democratic Values: Call for the safeguarding of press freedom, judicial independence, and the right to political dissent.
  5. Climate Action: Insist on continued American participation in the Paris Agreement and other climate initiatives.
  6. Strengthening Alliances: Emphasize the importance of NATO and other transatlantic partnerships in maintaining global stability.

The European Parliament’s silence at this critical juncture would be tantamount to complicity. It is the duty of European leaders to stand firmly for the values that underpin our shared civilization and to remind the United States of its role as a global leader and steward of these values.

Conclusion

As the world watches the unfolding of a Trump presidency, Europe must not waver in its commitment to justice, equality, and the rule of law. The European Parliament, as the voice of the European Union, has both the moral and political obligation to articulate these concerns and to champion the principles that define our collective identity. Let this moment be one of resolute action, guided by the enduring belief that truth and justice will prevail.
